Sinopse

This book, Analogue spacetimes: The first thirty years is the Proceedings of the II Amazonian Symposium on Physics, held in Belém-Pará-Brazil, from May 31st to june 3rd 2011. This Symposium was held to celebrate the 30-year (pearl) anniversary of the publication of Bil Unruh's seminal paper Experimental Black Hole Evaporation? [PRL 46 (1981) 1351-1353]; a paper which played a foudational role leading to the currently vibrant field of Analogue Models of Gravity. With hindsight, one can of course find precursors to Unruh's ideas scattered thoughout the literature, but Unruh's paper was the first to make clear that the analogy between sound propagandation in a fluid and curved-spacetime wave equations could be extended to horizons and acoustic black holes (dumb holes). Futhermore (and ultimately much more significantly) Unruh demonstrated that the analogy between sound propagation in a fluid and curved-spacetime quantum field theory could be extended to include Hawking radiation - and thereby roughly half of standard general-relativistic black-hole thermodynamics couls be carried over into an analogue spacetime framework. Because know analogue models do not reproduce the Einstein equations of general relativity, they are best used to probe kinematic aspects of general relativity - as opposed to dynamical aspects witch currently cannot be probed by anologue spacetime techniques. Thus while it is "easy" to get Hawking radiation, at least from a theoretical perspective, Bekenstein entropy is much more subtle, an much more difficult to implement. Activity in this field is currently undergoing a signifant surge: A recent review article has over 700 references, and new articles are being written at a rate of about 50 per year. Significant work is now going into attempts at experimental verification of the Hawking process. It is already clear that spontaneus Hawking emission is less clear, but signs are very promising. Over the next few years we are likely to see significant progress on this front.
